🔍 What is Case Hardening?

Case hardening is a heat treatment process that adds carbon or carbon and nitrogen to the surface of steel, producing a hard, wear-resistant outer layer while keeping the inner core ductile and tough.

This process is ideal for parts that need a durable surface to resist wear, but still require shock absorption or flexibility under stress. Common applications include gears, fasteners, and engine components.

🔬 How Case Hardening Works

Case hardening relies on diffusion — the process of atoms migrating into the steel’s surface at elevated temperatures. The key types include:
