🔍 What is Through Hardening?

Through hardening is a heat treatment process that increases hardness and strength throughout the entire section of a steel part. Unlike case hardening—which hardens only the surface—through hardening transforms the whole part, making it suitable for applications where uniform strength and wear resistance are critical.

⚙️ How Through Hardening Works

The process typically involves three main steps:

1. Heating – The steel alloy is heated to its critical temperature to alter its internal structure
   
   

2. Quenching – The part is rapidly cooled in a medium such as oil, salt, or caustic to harden the structure
   
   

3. Tempering – The part is reheated to a lower temperature to reduce brittleness and improve toughness
   
   

🔧 The result is a fully hardened steel part — often called “tempered steel,” although tempering is just one part of the process.

Note: Low-carbon steels are not suitable for through hardening unless carburized. 

📏 Process Control

• Tempering conditions (to fine-tune mechanical properties)
  
  

Typical final hardness: HRC 45 – 62 (depending on steel type and application)
